WASHINGTON — Throughout the past few years, the U.S. homicide rate has surged. However, we now know more insight into just how much the rates have increased, according to a report from WalletHub.
Homicide rates have fallen by an average of roughly 5% in 40 of the most populated U.S. cities between Q3 2021 and Q3 2023. For comparison, the homicide rate in these cities was 10% higher in Q1 2023 than it was in Q1 2021.
The comparison was based on per capita homicides in Q3 2023, as well as per capita homicides in Q3 2023 compared to Q3 2022 and Q3 2021.
The following cities had the most significant homicide rates overall:
- Washington, D.C.
- Memphis, Tenn.
- Detroit, Mich.
- Milwaukee, Wis.
- Atlanta, Ga.
The following cities had the lowest homicides per capita in Q3 2023:
- Chesapeake, Va.
- Chandler, Ariz.
- St. Paul, Minn.
- Sacramento, Calif.
- Lincoln, Neb.
