Matt Patricia’s time in the City of Brotherly Love appears to have come to an end.
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport reported Sunday night that the Philadelphia Eagles senior defensive assistant plans to “explore other opportunities” for the 2024 season. Patricia, who was hired by the Eagles in April 2023, is not under contract for next season.
The 49-year-old took over calling Philadelphia’s defensive plays in December after back-to-back losses in which the Eagles’ defensive unit surrendered 42 and 33 points.

The defense continued to struggle under Patricia’s direction, and gave up 27.8 points per game and 327.2 yards. The Eagles were eliminated from the postseason after getting blown out by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 32-9, in the NFC Wild Card Game.
Patricia, according to Pelissero and Rapoport, is expected to be a “top defensive coordinator candidate,” but it’s unclear what teams will be interested .
After getting fired by the Detroit Lions as their head coach in 2021, Patricia returned to the New England Patriots for his second stint with the organization. He didn’t have a specified role, but took over as an offensive play caller in 2022. New England’s offense struggled under Patricia, missed the playoffs and suffered a losing record.
It will be interesting to see where Patricia lands next as he looks to continue his career in the NFL.
