Report: Former Red Sox manager in running to take over as Angels skipper

Three years after a one-year cameo in Boston, Ron Roenicke is reportedly under consideration for another crack at managing in the big leagues.

Roenicke is one of a handful of candidates who “may get formal interviews” with the Angels for their managerial opening, according to a report from USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. On Sunday, a source told MassLive’s Sean McAdam that no official interview had been scheduled between the sides.

Roenicke, 67, has been working as a special assistant in the Dodgers front office for the last three seasons. Originally Alex Cora’s bench coach for two seasons, Roenicke spent just one year at the helm of the Red Sox, taking over for the shortened 2020 campaign after Cora’s role in the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal (and subsequent suspension) cost him his job. Roenicke was fired on the last day of the season (the Red Sox finished 24-36) and Cora was re-hired weeks later.

Roenicke has plenty of experience with the Angels organization. From 2000 to 2010, he served as a coach on manager Mike Scioscia’s staff, first as a third base coach, then as bench coach. He managed the Brewers from 2011 to 2015, and after a cameo as the Dodgers’ third base coach at the end of the 2015 season, joined the Angels again as third base coach in 2016 and 2017. At that point, Cora hired him away to be his right-hand man in Boston. He spent a total of three years with the Red Sox.

The Angels are considering a wide-ranging series of candidates to replace Phil Nevin, who was let go during the season. According to Nightengale, former players Torii Hunter, Darin Erstand and Tim Salmon are all in the mix. Angels coach Benji Gil infield coach also under consideration. Buck Showalter, who was fired by the Mets after the season, is believed to have a shot as well.

The Angels are among five teams currently looking for a new manager along with the Guardians, Mets, Astros and Padres. The Giants already filled their vacancy by poaching Bob Melvin from San Diego. The Brewers may also be in the market for a new skipper if Craig Counsell departs for Cleveland, New York or elsewhere.
