Report: Ex-Red Sox pitcher placed on waivers by team that traded for him at deadline

The Padres traded for Rich Hill at this year’s Aug. 1 deadline to add to their starting rotation. But with San Diego’s postseason chances slipping away, the team is trying to shed some salary.

The New York Post’s Joel Sherman reported the Padres placed the 43-year-old on waivers on Tuesday. The plan, per Sherman, is “to see if someone will pick him up for the last few weeks of the season. If not, he will remain with the club.”

The Padres marked the 13th MLB club Hill was part of.

Hill hasn’t been able to find much of a groove with San Diego. In seven games, the left-hander went 0-4 with a 9.27 ERA and was pulled from the starting rotation.

The former Red Sox pitcher — who’s in Year 19 of his career — spent the 2022 season with Boston. He went 8-7 with a 4.27 ERA, but began to turn things around in the second half of the season. Hill expressed his desire to return to the organization, but the Red Sox didn’t offer him a contract.

It will be interesting to see whether a team will take a flyer on Hill or if he’ll remain with the Padres.
