Report: Derek Carr avoids serious injury after leaving Week 3 vs. Packers early

The Saints were holding their breath after Derek Carr went down with a shoulder injury in the third quarter of New Orleans’ eventual loss to the Green Bay Packers. But it appears it’s not as serious as originally thought.

Carr was sacked by Rashan Gary and was taken down hard. The quarterback remained down and was in obvious pain for a few minutes. Carr was able to walk off the field on his own, but was later taken to the locker room for further evaluation before being ruled out for the remainder of the game.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Carr is believes to have suffered an AC sprain — an injury that isn’t as serious as originally thought. And even though the QB is expected to miss some time, the injury doesn’t “appear to be season-ending,” and his return will depend on “swelling and how he gains mobility.”

Carr was taken to a local hospital so additional tests could be run, including getting checked for internal injuries.

Jameis Winston replaced Carr in the third quarter and figures to be the QB1 until his teammate returns to the field. Winston completed 10 of his 16 passes for 101 yards.

The Saints will now look to bounce back against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 4.
