Report: Day after getting claimed by Patriots, NT fails physical due to ‘surprise’ injury

The Patriots claimed nose tackle Marquan McCall off waivers from the Carolina Panthers on Tuesday. Not even 24 hours later, he was back on waivers.

According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, McCall failed due to a knee injury that was flagged, but it came as a “surprise” because the 24-year-old has never missed time because of said knee issue. He’ll now revert back to waivers and another team can claim him.

McCall, who signed with the Panthers as an undrafted free agent in 2022, amassed 15 tackles for Carolina last year. He was originally listed as the starting nose tackle, but was waived Monday.

Panthers coach Frank Reich told reporters it was a move made mainly due to McCall’s fit for their “scheme and style,” and waived him when they did because they believed he’d end up on a team quickly.

The Patriots waived wide receiver Tre Nixon in order to make room for McCall. Nixon was a long-shot to make the 53-man roster, and his chances became slimmer after he injured his shoulder in New England’s preseason game against the Green Bay Packers.

It’s unclear what the extent of the injury is, if another team will claim McCall or how the Patriots will fill the final spot on their 90-man roster.
