Red Sox’ ‘work in progress’ from Devers trade allows 1 hit in 5 scoreless for WooSox

HOUSTON — Kyle Harrison, the left-handed starter who the Red Sox acquired from the Giants in the Rafael Devers trade, allowed just one hit in five scoreless innings in Triple-A Worcester’s 1-0 loss to Iowa on Wednesday.

The 24-year-old was effective but showed some control issues, striking out eight batters while walking four.

Harrison has limited opponents to no runs and three hits over his past two starts (10 innings). He has a 3.48 ERA in nine starts for the WooSox. Command has been an issue with 24 walks in 41 ⅓ innings.

“Just a work in progress,” manager Alex Cora said Wednesday, after Harrison’s start. “And if needed, we believe he can do it here. But right now where we’re at, we feel comfortable with the guys that we have here. But he’s an option.”

Harrison threw 49 fastballs, topping out at 95.4 mph and averaging 93.7 mph. He got five swings and misses with his fastball, four with his slider and two with his slurve. He didn’t get any whiffs with his changeup, which he threw eight times.

“We know his fastball is very unique,” Cora said. “There’s all this stuff that, I don’t want to get into details, we keep working on it. But we’re deeper than what people think. He’s part of it and just happy that he’s turning in the right direction.”
