For the first time in years, the Red Sox are planning on using a set schedule to determine which uniforms they wear next season.
Appearing on DraftKings’ The Name Redacted Podcast this week, manager Alex Cora revealed that the club will no longer choose which jerseys to wear at random. At home, the Red Sox will primarily wear their traditional white jerseys while donning their red alternates on Friday nights and their yellow, Boston Marathon-themed City Connect jerseys on Saturdays. On the road, the Sox will wear gray uniforms except on Fridays, when they wear their blue alternates.
Over the last couple years, the Red Sox have worn alternate uniforms on a more frequent basis, with starting pitchers often getting to decide which jerseys would be worn for games they pitched. In 2023, Cora and clubhouse manager Tommy McLaughlin frequently collaborated to get the team to win the yellow jerseys whenever they were struggling in an effort to turn things around. While watching the World Series at home, Cora called McLaughlin and said he wanted the main uniforms to be worn more often.
“There’s gonna be structure next year,” Cora said. “There’s gonna be a lot of whites, a lot of grays. I think our uniforms are great. Good-looking uniforms.
“We cannot rely on yellow whenever we suck,” Cora added. “Is it the uniforms or is it us?”
The yellow City Connects have quickly gained popularity since first being introduced in 2021. The Red Sox have played particularly well while wearing them. They are 27-7 in yellow jerseys since introducing them three seasons ago and went 12-3 in them in 2023. They won 10 consecutive games in the uniforms from July 27, 2022 to Aug. 7, 2023.
The yellow jerseys will return April 14, when the Red Sox host the Angels for their first Saturday home game of 2024.
“On Saturdays, people know, ‘City Connects.’ You go wearing yellow to Fenway Park,” Cora said.
