Red Sox’ Trevor Story to undergo MRI on Saturday; ‘A lot of frustration’

ANAHEIM, Calif. — Shortstop Trevor Story will undergo an MRI on his left shoulder Saturday. He was removed from the Red Sox’ 8-6 win over the Angels in the fourth inning Friday after injuring it.

He dived to his right to field Mike Trout’s ground ball in the fourth inning. He gloved it but then landed on his left arm. Story remained down on the shallow outfield grass for a few minutes in obvious pain before walking off with the trainer and manager Alex Cora.

“Obviously did something to the shoulder there. Pretty painful,” Story said. “We didn’t get images yet. So we’ll have that tomorrow. I’m not trying to put any words on it yet because we don’t know for sure. So yeah, painful. Just kind of landed on the body weight on the shoulder there.

“We’re refraining from kind of diagnosing it right now until we get more information tomorrow,” he added.

Story underwent right elbow surgery in January 2023, then missed the first four months of last season. He did not return until Aug. 8.

The shortstop shook his head as he came off the field. He said he was feeling “a lot of emotions.”

“We don’t know how severe it is just yet. A lot of frustration,” Story said.

He said he has never had previous issues with his left shoulder.

“Instincts take over. I was just trying to make the play. That’s it,” Story said. “I had a good beat on it. Obviously I caught the ball. When I hit the ground, I released it. Yeah, instincts just took over. I was trying to make a play for (starting pitcher) Kutter (Crawford). Obviously not ideal.”
