ANAHEIM, Calif. — Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story is uncertain if he will play again in 2024 after suffering a left shoulder subluxation. He said there’s a chance he will return.
“I always have hope for that,” Story said.
Story has a doctor’s appointment scheduled for Monday in Boston. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said the Red Sox are still gathering information and so they are unsure yet whether Story’s injured shoulder will require surgery or if the shortstop will miss the rest of the season.
It is an injury that sometimes requires a surgical procedure. Red Sox prospect Miguel Bleis underwent season-ending surgery last June for a left shoulder subluxation.
“I think we’ll be in a much better position on Monday to provide some answers to those questions,” Breslow said.

Story was in a somber mood as he spoke with reporters following the Red Sox’ 2-1 loss to the Angels on Saturday. He underwent an MRI approximately two and a half hours before the game.
“Still trying to gather all the information, all the opinions from everybody involved,” Story said. “It’s a significant injury. But yeah, I think we’re kind of waiting to diagnose it when we get all the opinions.”
Story injured his shoulder Friday while diving to his right to field a ground ball. He called it “kind of a freak thing.”
“Just frustrating,” Story said. “Just not fun, man. Not fun getting injured.”
The 31-year-old shortstop went 7-for-31 (.226) with three doubles in eight games. The Red Sox recalled infielder David Hamilton from Triple-A Worcester to take Story’s spot on the active roster.
