Red Sox trade Rafael Devers to Giants in shocking blockbuster deal

BOSTON — In an absolutely shocking development, the Red Sox have traded Rafael Devers.

Devers has been traded to the Giants in a deal that will send multiple players to Boston, according to multiple sources. The out-of-nowhere blockbuster is done. As first reported by FanSided’s Robert Murray, who first reported the trade, pitchers Jordan Hicks and Kyle Harrison as well as prospects James Tibbs III and Jose Bello are headed to Boston.

Hicks will join Boston and be placed on the 15-day injured list with a lingering toe injury. Harrison is on the 40-man roster but was assigned to Triple-A Worcester. The Giants took on the entirety of Devers’ remaining contract, which spans nine seasons (including this one) and totals about $250 million. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and team president/CEO Sam Kennedy will address reporters via Zoom on Monday.

Devers, a three-time All-Star who is in his ninth season with the Red Sox, was signed to a 10-year, $313.5 million extension in January 2023. At the time, the Red Sox billed him as their face of the franchise for the next decade. But things quickly changed as Devers’ dissatisfaction with the organization grew.

Devers’ 2025 season has been filled in with drama. In spring training, he scoffed at the Red Sox’ request that he move from third base to designated hitter, then in May, refused to move to first base in the wake of Triston Casas’ season-ending knee injury. That stance — as well as Devers’ decision to go public with his displeasure with the front office — led to principal owner John Henry, chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and president/CEO Sam Kennedy flying to Kansas City to meet with Devers on May 9.

Devers hit a solo home run in Sunday’s 2-0 win over the Yankees. This season, he is on track for another All-Star Game appearance after hitting .272 with 15 homers, 58 RBIs and a .905 OPS in 73 games.

Devers was signed as international free agent with the Red Sox in August of 2013 when he was just 16 years old. He then spent parts of the next four seasons climbing the organization’s minor league ladder before joining the Red Sox after just nine games at the Triple A level.

At the age of 20, Devers was promoted to the parent team while the Red Sox were in Seattle in July of 2017. Ironically, the Red Sox were headed to Seattle Sunday night for the start of their three-city, nine-game road trip which begins Monday — this time, without Devers.

In addition to being a three-time All-Star, Devers was twice a Silver Slugger winner. He was the only player in franchise history to lead the team in RBIs for five consecutive seasons (2020-2024).

He was also the youngest player in Red Sox history with a 200-hit season (201 in 2019 at the age of 22) and the youngest to belt 50 doubles in a season (54, also in 2019).

He leaves the Red Sox with the third-most games played at third base in team history behind only Wade Boggs and Frank Malzone. But he didn’t play a single games there — or anywhere else in the field — in the 2025 season.
