BOSTON — The Red Sox are optioning left-handed reliever Jovani Morán to Triple-A Worcester, according to an industry source.
Lefty reliever Brennan Bernardino, meanwhile, is being recalled from Worcester to take Morán’s spot Tuesday, according to another source.
Morán struggled in Boston’s 6-3 loss to the Orioles on Monday, allowing two runs, two hits and two walks while striking out three in 2 innings. He gave up an RBI single to Dylan Beavers and RBI triple to Gunnar Henderson in the seventh inning as Baltimore extended its lead from 2-0 to 4-0.
The Red Sox selected Morán’s contract from Worcester last Monday. In two appearances, the 28-year-old allowed three runs, five hits and three walks while striking out five in 4 innings.
Bernardino was optioned to Worcester on Aug. 1 after Boston acquired lefty Steven Matz from the Cardinals at the trade deadline. The 33-year-old has a 3.09 ERA, 3.48 FIP and 1.26 WHIP in 47 outings (43 ⅔ innings) for Boston this year. He allowed one run in 4 innings for Worcester.
