Boston designated Alfaro for assignment Wednesday when Reese McGuire returned from a month-long injured list stint as Connor Wong’s backup behind the plate. Because the trade deadline had passed when Alfaro was cut, the Red Sox had to expose him to waivers. No team claimed him but he has enough major league service time to refuse an assignment to the minors.
Alfaro has had a roller-coaster season that has included two stints with the Red Sox. Originally signed to a minor league deal in January, he made a strong case to make the Opening Day roster but was ultimately beaten out by Wong and McGuire and began the year at Triple-A Worcester, where he hit .320 with six homers, 13 doubles, two triples and an .886 OPS in 43 games before opting out of his contract on June 1. He signed with the Rockies shortly thereafter, but after going just 5-for-31 in 10 games, was cut by Colorado and became a free agent. In an effort to get an offensive upgrade over Caleb Hamilton with McGuire down, the Red Sox brought Alfaro back on a major league contract on July 6. He struggled on both sides of the ball in eight games for Boston and hit just .118 (2-for-17) with three strikeouts before being cut loose Wednesday.

Alfaro is a veteran of 496 career games with the Phillies, Marlins, Padres, Rockies and Red Sox. The 30-year-old hit 18 homers in 130 games for the Marlins in 2019.
