Red Sox reactions: Two slumping infielders combine for 7 RBIs in win over Yankees

NEW YORK — Instant reactions from the Red Sox’ 10-7 win over the Yankees at Yankee Stadium on Saturday:

1) Boston improved to 31-35 while the Yankees dropped to 39-24.

2) Trevor Story has struggled with a .599 OPS this season. But his three-run double down the left field line in the third inning turned a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead for Boston. Story also had a two-run single in the ninth inning to put the Red Sox ahead 10-7 after the Yankees had cut it to one-run in the eighth. He had three hits.

3) Rookie Kristian Campbell has been slumping for a long time as well. His OPS is down to .661. But he had two big RBI singles off Yankees left-handed starter Ryan Yarbrough.

He connected on a cutter from Yarbrough in the second inning and hit a groundball RBI single to right field to make it 1-0. He connected on a changeup (outside bottom corner of the strike zone) from Yarbrough and hit it the opposite way to put the Red Sox ahead 6-3 in the third inning.

4) Romy Gonzalez stroked three hits, including a 384-foot two-run home run to left field in the fourth inning to put Boston ahead 8-3. His blast made up for a bad play in the second inning when he ranged too far to his right for a ground ball. He should have let second baseman Kristian Campbell handle it. It led to an infield single for Cody Bellinger who later scored on Austin Wells’ three-run homer.

5) Ace Garrett Crochet pitched 6 innings in his first start against the Yankees in a Red Sox uniform. He allowed five runs on six hits (including Austin Wells’ three-run homer) and one walk while striking out nine. He threw 97 pitches (67 strikes). He struck out Aaron Judge all three times he faced him.

6) Abraham Toro — who’s only two offers this past offseason came from Boston and New York — hit an RBI single in the second inning to cut the Red Sox’ deficit to 3-2.

7) Devers got thrown out at the plate when he ran on contact on Carlos Narváez grounder to first baseman Paul Goldschmidt with no outs and two men in scoring position in the third inning. Goldschmidt cut down Devers at the plate for the first out.

) Red Sox left-handed reliever Justin Wilson entered Saturday with a 2.25 ERA in 25 outings. But he walked two batters and then gave up a two-run RBI single to DJ LeMahieu that cut the Yankees’ deficit to 8-7 in the eighth.

) The Red Sox and Yankees will play the final game of their three-game series on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball. Boston righty Hunter Dobbins (2-1, 4.06 ERA) will start opposite lefty Carlos Rodón (8-3, 2.49 ERA)
