SEATTLE — Instant reactions from the Red Sox’ 8-0 loss to the Mariners on Tuesday at T-Mobile Park.
1) The Red Sox’ winning streak ended at six games. Boston dropped to 38-37 overall and 16-20 on the road.
2) Starter Walker Buehler’s ERA jumped to 5.95 ERA (59 innings, 38 earned runs) in 12 starts as he allowed eight runs on eight hits and four walks while striking out two in 3 ⅓ innings. He gave up a 370-foot grand slam to Cal Raleigh in the second inning that made it 5-0.
3) The Red Sox offense recorded just two hits, a single by Marcelo Mayer in the fifth inning and a single by Nate Eaton in the ninth. Mariners starter Bryan Woo allowed just one hit and two walks while striking out six in 7 scoreless innings.
4) Boston failed to control the run game, something they have done well recently. Seattle base stealers were 3-for-3 against catcher Carlos Narváez. Rowdy Tellez recorded his first steal this season and just the fifth of his career.
5) Zack Kelly replaced Buehler and retired all five batters he faced, including striking out two.
6) Jorge Alcala — acquired in a trade with the Twins on Wednesday — made his first appearance for Boston. He pitched a perfect seventh inning (pop out to first, strikeout swinging and groundout to shortstop). He threw the three fastest pitches by a Red Sox pitcher in the game (99.7 mph, 98.7 mph, 98.6 mph).
7) The Red Sox and Mariners will play the rubber game of their three-game series Wednesday at 4:10 p.m. eastern. Lefty Garrett Crochet (6-4, 2.25 ERA) will start for Boston opposite righty Luis Castillo (4-4, 3.29 ERA).
