BOSTON — Instant reactions from the Red Sox’ 6-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles at Fenway Park on Monday:
1) Boston dropped to 68-58 overall and 41-24 at home. The Orioles improved to 58-67.
2) Lefty Trevor Rogers has been dominant against the Red Sox at Fenway Park this season. In two starts, he has allowed just one run, six hits, and one walk while striking out 12 in 13 ⅓ innings. His performance on Monday was impressive, giving up only one run and two hits in 7 innings.
3) Red Sox starter Dustin May pitched 6 innings, allowing two runs, eight hits and two walks while striking out five. Gunnar Henderson crushed a 414-foot, 108 mph solo homer off May in the third inning, putting the Orioles ahead 1-0. Dylan Beavers’ RBI single in the fourth inning made it 2-0.
4) May threw 35 sweepers (four whiffs), 33 sinkers (one whiff), 18 four-seam fastballs (three whiffs) and 14 cutters (one whiff), per Statcast. His sinker averaged 93.9 mph and his four-seamer averaged 95.1 mph. He threw 68 of his 100 pitches for strikes.
5) Lefty reliever Jovani Morán, who the Red Sox promoted from Worcester last Monday, struggled in his second appearance for Boston. He replaced May and allowed two runs on two hits and one walk in the seventh as Boston fell behind 4-0. Henderson hit an RBI triple that deflected off the wall and wasn’t cleanly fielded by right fielder Roman Anthony.
6) Morán also pitched the eighth and Jordan Hicks pitched the ninth. Hicks allowed a two-run single to Samuel Basallo, making it 6-1 O’s. He has allowed 14 runs, including 11 earned runs, in 14 innings since Boston acquired him from the Giants in the Rafael Devers trade.
7) The Red Sox finally scored against Rogers in the seventh. Alex Bregman led off with a walk. Trevor Story doubled with one out. Jarren Duran’s 365-foot RBI sac fly to center on an 0-2 slider made it 4-1.
8) Nate Eaton, who Boston recalled from Triple-A Worcester earlier Monday, led off the bottom of the first inning with an infield single.
9) Newly-acquired Nathaniel Lowe pinch hit in the ninth and drew a walk in his first plate appearance with Boston.
10) The Red Sox’ ninth-inning rally was too little, too late. Roman Anthony singled and Lowe walked. Jarren Duran hit a two-run double with two outs, cutting it to 6-3. Ceddanne Rafaela
11) The Orioles and Red Sox will play the finale of their two-game series Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. Righty Walker Buehler (7-7, 5.43 ERA) will start for Boston opposite Baltimore right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano (10-5, 4.13 ERA).
