Red Sox plug rookie starter into injured Hunter Dobbins’ rotation spot

CHICAGO — Rookie Richard Fitts will take injured starter Hunter Dobbins’ spot in the starting rotation on Tuesday.

Fitts will pitch the second game of the Red Sox’ three-game series against the Phillies in Philadelphia. Walker Buehler will start the series opener Monday and Lucas Giolito will pitch the series finale Wednesday.

Manager Alex Cora said last Sunday that Fitts would probably take Dobbins’ spot. The Red Sox confirmed it Saturday.

Dobbins suffered a season-ending ACL tear July 12.

Fitts has gone 1-3 with a 4.28 ERA (33 ⅔ innings, 16 earned runs) in eight starts for Boston this year. He spent from April 13-May 27 on the injured list with a right pectoral strain.
