HOUSTON — The Astros were in quite the giving mood Monday night. Unfortunately for the Red Sox, so was their bullpen.
Boston coughed up yet another late-game lead as Yainer Diaz walked it off against Kenley Jansen with a solo blast to deep left to give gave the Astros a 5-4 win. The late-game avalanche ruined a strong night from Tanner Houck, spoiled a big pinch-hit moment from Masataka Yoshida and bailed the Astros out of a game in which they combined for four errors. The Red Sox fell to 65-59, and on a night when the Royals won — again — it hurt even more. Boston fell to 4½ games behind Kansas City for the final wild card spot in the American League.
