NEW YORK — Shortly before first pitch Friday, the Red Sox shifted Roman Anthony to the designated hitter role because he was feeling a bit under the weather. He’s not yet 100% but is back in the outfield as Boston looks for its third straight win in a Saturday matinee in the Bronx.
Anthony is leading off against Yankees righty Will Warren with first pitch set for 1:05 p.m. ET. Masataka Yoshida is back in the DH role after not being in Friday’s lineup. Anthony, one of the heroes Thursday, was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts Friday night.
“I don’t know that he’s a lot better but we’ve got to DH Masa today,” said manager Alex Cora.
Nathaniel Lowe is starting at first base and hitting fifth with Ceddanne Rafaela in center, David Hamilton at second base and Carlos Narváez catching ace Garrett Crochet. Boston has won seven straight games against the Yankees and clinched the season series with Friday’s win. The Sox are an American League-best 28-15 since the start of July and enter the day in sole possession of the first AL wild card spot, four games clear of the Royals, who are in fourth in the race.
Crochet, who leads the AL in wins and innings pitched, allowed six earned runs in 14 ⅓ innings in back-to-back starts against the Yankees in June. At Yankee Stadium, he allowed five earned runs on six hits in six innings in a 10-7 win on June 7.
