Red Sox’ Alex Cora gives positive Alex Bregman injury update

NEW YORK — Alex Bregman (right quad strain) began his running progression Thursday, manager Alex Cora said.

“If it’s up to him, he’ll be playing tonight,” Cora joked Friday before Boston’s series opener against the Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Bregman was placed on the 10-day injured list May 24. Cora back then called the injury “significant” and similar to the quad strain Bregman suffered in 2021, which kept him sidelined from June 17-Aug. 25.

“Just going through a progression compared to when he got hurt before with Houston. He feels a lot better,” Cora said.

Bregman is here with the team in New York for a three-game series.

“He’s locked in,” Cora said. “He has his date on his mind. We just have to keep working. Obviously we don’t want to rush and we have to be very diligent with it. But he’s feeling great.”

When Cora was asked if it’s fair to say it has gone better than expected so far, he replied, “Yeah, I think so.”

Cora would not say which date Bregman is targeting for a return.

The Gold Glove third baseman was batting .299 with a .385 on-base percentage, .553 slugging percentage, .938 OPS, 11 home runs, 17 doubles, 35 RBIs, 32 runs, 22 walks and 42 strikeouts in 51 games (226 plate appearances).
