Red Sox 2018 World Series champ starting for Cubs in NLDS Game 5 vs. Brewers

Drew Pomeranz, who pitched in 72 games for the Red Sox from 2016-18, will start for the Cubs in elimination Game 5 of the NLDS against the Brewers.

The 36-year-old lefty will serve as an opener. He posted a 2.17 ERA, 3.36 FIP and 1.07 WHIP in 57 outings (four starts) for Chicago this season. He struck out 57 and walked 15 while holding opponents to a .210 batting average in 49 ⅔ innings.

Pomeranz likely will pitch just the first inning. He never recorded more than four outs in a game this season. Fifty-three of his 57 appearances lasted an inning or shorter.

He has been dominant this postseason for the Cubs, tossing five scoreless and hitless innings while walking nobody and striking out five.

Pomeranz recorded a 4.24 ERA in 72 outings (56 starts) in three seasons with Boston. He made a start for the Red Sox in the 2017 ALDS vs. the Astros but gave up four runs in two innings.

Pomeranz did not appear in any games in the 2018 postseason for Boston. He missed some time that year with left biceps tendinitis. He was not on Boston’s ALDS or ALCS rosters. The Red Sox selected him for their World Series roster against the Dodgers, although he didn’t appear in a game. He left in free agency after the ‘18 season.
