Raiders replace Josh McDaniels with captain of team that upset ‘07 Patriots

The Las Vegas Raiders have gone from Patriots West to turning to a head coach who played a key role in undermining New England’s bid for an undefeated season.

After firing head coach Josh McDaniels and general manager Dave Ziegler, the Raiders announced that they have named linebacker coach Antonio Pierce as their interim head coach.

Pierce played nine NFL seasons, including five with the Giants, including a Pro Bowl season in 2006. He started out as an undrafted free agent with Washington. But by the 2007 season, he’d become a captain of the Giants team that upset the then-undefeated Patriots in Super Bowl XLII. Pierce logged 11 tackles in the game as New York pulled out a 17-14 win against what had been a legendary offense that featured Tom Brady, Randy Moss and Wes Welker.

The offensive coordinator for that 2007 Patriots team? That would be McDaniels.

The combination of McDaniels and Ziegler (a former Patriots executive) had only been running the Raiders for a year and a half. However, frustrations in Vegas had been mounting amid the team’s 3-5 start this season. The Raiders finished 9-16 under McDaniels/Ziegler.

Under McDaniels and Ziegler, the Raiders had been loaded with Patriots ties, many of which have been severed in recent days. The team’s starting quarterback had been former Patriots draft pick Jimmy Garoppolo, who has since been benched for rookie Aidan O’Connell. Meanwhile, offensive coordinator Mick Lombardi (another former New England coach) was also fired.
