‘Positively tropical’ day ahead for Mass. with showers, thunderstorms

Some relief from the intense heat and humidity that has blanketed Massachusetts this week will arrive on Thursday.

But it will still be intensely humid, with showers and thunderstorms likely in the afternoon. Temperatures are likely to climb well into the 80s, with dewpoints in the 70s, thanks to a “positively tropical-feeling airmass,” according to National Weather Service forecasters.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are likeliest to hit in the afternoon. While the chances for widespread rainfall are low, any storms that do form could bring heavy downpours. Those downpours, in turn, could cause localized flooding, though the risk of floods is only marginal.

Drier air moves in Thursday night into Friday morning, bringing real relief from the heat and humidity. Temperatures along the coast should remain in the high 70s, while temperatures in Western Massachusetts will be closer to the upper 80s.

Similar conditions are ahead on Saturday, with mainly sunny skies, temperatures in the 80s, and easterly winds.

It will be significantly warmer on Sunday, though, with temperatures in the mid-80s and approaching 90. Humidity will make it feel even hotter than that.

“Daytime heating, moisture, and an approaching front … should support development of afternoon showers and thunderstorms,” forecasters wrote.

A cold front is expected to push into the region overnight Sunday into Monday, dropping temperatures to the 70s for much of the state. There is a chance for isolated to scattered showers, but forecasters say they have low confidence in the timing of the rainfall.
