Popular Somerville grocery store closing because of underperforming sales

A popular grocery store in Somerville known for selling more natural and organic products is closing its doors because of underperforming sales, according to store representatives.

The bfresh market located at 224 Elm St. in Somerville will be closing for good at 6 p.m. on Oct. 12, according to a message posted to the store’s website.

A spokesperson with the store’s sibling company Stop & Shop told MassLive Thursday that they decided to not renew the store’s lease as it was not meeting financial expectations.

“All associates will be given the opportunity to transfer to other Stop & Shop locations, and several nearby Stop & Shop stores across Medford, Malden, Arlington, and Watertown look forward to welcoming customers,” the spokesperson said in a statement.

Customers can also shop online for home delivery, the spokesperson added.

Bfresh opened in Davis Square in February 2017, according to Cambridge Day. The local grocery chain had other locations in Allston and Brighton, but they closed in 2017 and 2019, respectively.

Those stores also were meeting financial expectations, according to the outlet. It is currently unknown what will be replacing the Somerville bfresh.
