Police seek public’s help finding person who shot at Mass. ice cream shop ATM

Chelmsford police are asking for the public’s help in finding the person they believe is responsible for firing a gun at an ATM at an ice cream shop in the town and on Monday released surveillance footage showing the suspect.

The suspect is believed to be a man who is described as at least six feet tall and approximately 250 pounds, Chelmsford police said in a statement. At the time of the incident, the suspect was wearing a dark green or grey hooded sweatshirt, a light-colored T-shirt, dark pants, and dark basketball shoes with white soles. They are seen on surveillance footage “brandishing and firing” a black handgun.

Chelmsford police went to the area of Sully’s Ice Cream Stand at 55 Graniteville Road around 7:19 a.m. Friday after receiving a report of shell casings in the parking lot and damage to an ATM machine. Investigators found eight spent shell casings in the area and determined the ATM on the property had been hit several times by gunfire.

Hours earlier, police received a report of loud bangs in the area around 1:40 a.m. but officers who went to the area could not confirm there were gunshots.

Surveillance footage shows a lone man approaching the ATM before shooting it multiple times. The machine’s money compartment was not damaged despite the gunfire, according to police. The man then left the area on foot.

The suspect appears to have been driving a light-colored Chevrolet Malibu sedan or similar car with a model year between 2019 to 2023, according to the statement.

Chelmsford Police urged anyone with information about the incident to call them at (978) 256-2521, ext. 5.
