Police say Mass. teen punched state trooper, ran away, then surrendered next day

A teenager who struck a Massachusetts State Police trooper on Friday appeared at the Cohasset Police Station the next day to surrender, state police announced in a statement on Monday.

At around 11:48 p.m. on Friday, a state trooper pulled over a gray Dodge Durango traveling southbound on Route 3 in Norwell. State police said the Durango drove up to the trooper’s cruiser’s back bumper in the left lane at a high rate of speed, then slowed and pulled around and in front of her.

The trooper found that the Durango’s license plate inspection sticker was expired, state police said. She was notified over radio that the 17-year-old associated with the plate had a known violent history toward police. She looked at the Registry of Motor Vehicles database and saw he was the subject of three active arrest warrants, including a probation violation that he incurred by not charging an ankle bracelet monitor he was ordered to wear due to a previous incident.

The Durango exited on Route 228 and stopped in front of an Audi dealership on Pond Street in Norwell, state police said. With her lights on, the trooper pulled over and approached the Durango. She noticed the passenger slip into the back passenger seat. She saw that it was the same 17-year-old, and his mother was driving.

The trooper asked the teen to step out and started to escort him when he started to run to the dealership, state police said. She pulled him toward her when he turned around and punched her in the face, shoving her “while shouting a vulgarity at her,” state police said.

He bolted across the road into a wooded area, which ended the foot pursuit. The trooper broadcasted a description of the teen and was tended to by EMS to treat her face. She was hospitalized but was then released.

State police K9 and Norwell police searched for the teen. While it was unsuccessful on Friday, state police issued an arrest warrant, charging the teen with assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest.

On Saturday morning, the Cohasset teen appeared outside the Cohasset police station and surrendered, state police said. He is expected to be arraigned at Hingham District Court for the new charges, but “he will also answer to the underlying charges from three prior warrants,” state police added.
