Police: Man stole $250K from an 85-year-old — and spent it on cars, drugs and tattoos

A 30-year-old Webster man, who has been evading police for months after a crime spree that included stealing $250,000 from an 85-year-old woman, has been caught, according to police.

Gavin Barszcz‘s crime spree began in April, according to the Webster Police Department, and has resulted in 29 new criminal charges.

On April 17, Barszcz was seen breaking into two vehicles by Webster Police Officers assigned to the overnight shift. When he was arrested, officers found keys and money from the vehicles in his pockets. He was charged with two counts of breaking and entering, three counts of receiving stolen property, possession of burglarious tools and trespassing.

About two months later, a motorcycle was reported stolen. Officers said they found it damaged behind a dumpster near an apartment Barszcz was in. According to police, Barszcz admitted to stealing it with his mother, in an attempt to sell the motorcycle for money for drugs. Barszcz was charged with larceny of a motor vehicle, vandalize property and conspiracy.

Police officers than began seeing Barszcz with several new motorcycles.

Five different times, police attempted to stop Barszcz for a traffic stop as none of the motorcycles were registered, one had a fake paper plate attached to it, and officers knew Barszcz did not have a valid driver’s license.

However, each time officers tried to stop the motorcycles, he sped away, police said.

During one of the times he was driving a motorcycle, police said Barszcz pointed a handgun at someone.

On Sept. 9, Barszcz was arguing with a woman he knew. According to police, during the argument, Barszcz threw and smashed glasses onto the floor, hitting the woman. It was also reported that he slapped the woman in the face.

In Dudley, two masked men armed with a handgun entered a home and stole about $250,000 dollars from an 85-year-old woman. Police believed Barszcz had been involved and executed two search warrants at apartments that were associated with Barszcz on Sept. 10.

Officials believe he profited anywhere from $50,000-$100,000 and used the money to buy a Mercedes Benz, an Acura MDX, a CBR1000 motorcycle and a Harley Davidson Street Glide motorcycle. Barszcz also bought multiple pairs of expensive shoes, high end watches, drugs and got new tattoos, according to police.

As a result of this investigation, Barszcz was charged with receiving stolen property over $1,200, conspiracy and accessory after the fact.

He was also charged with assault and batter on a family/household Member, assault with a dangerous weapon, two counts of failure to stop for police, two counts of negligent/reckless operation, 2 counts of speeding, unlicensed operation, uninsured motor vehicle, unregistered motor vehicle, concealing a number plate, failure to stop/yield, marked lanes and one way violation.

As of October 21, Barszcz is being held at the Worcester County House of Corrections.
