Police continue searching for suspect Friday after Maine mass shooting

Maine State Police are continuing to search for a suspect Friday after a gunman killed 18 people and injured 13 more in a bowling alley and restaurant Wednesday.

Robert Card, 40, was identified by officials as the suspect in both shootings.

Card had been trained as a firearms instructor at a U.S. Army Reserve training facility in Maine. The document says Card had been committed to a mental health facility for two weeks in the summer of 2023.

“If you come into contact with this individual, or someone who looks like this individual, call 911,” Maine State Police Col. William Ross said.

The document also said Card had reported hearing voices and had threatened to carry out a shooting at the military training base in Saco, Maine.

Seven people, one woman and six men, were killed at Sparetime Recreation, a bowling alley. Four miles away, seven men inside Schemengees Bar and Grille and one man outside the bar were killed by gunshot wounds, police said.

Three people that were taken to hospitals also died, police said.

Thursday night law enforcement officials were in Bowdoin, where Card is from, to execute several search warrants on Meadow Road. Although, officials said it was unknown whether Card was in any of them homes before the searches.

“The announcements that are being heard over a loud speaker are standard search warrant announcements when executing a warrant to ensure the safety of all involved,” Maine State Police wrote on Facebook. “Law enforcement officials are simply doing their due diligence by tracking down every lead in an effort to locate and apprehend Card.”

State police also said reports that multiple gunshots had been fired at a home in Bowdoin were not true.

WCVB reported officials left the area after about two hours Thursday.

Card’s family is urging him to turn himself in, CNN reported.

“The police have been given anything that we can offer to facilitate their efforts,” Ryan Card texted the news outlet, adding that “there are many people hurting out there, please focus on them … this is many people’s worst nightmare.”
