Plane crashes into Lake Winnipesaukee; Only pilot on board

An airplane crashed into Lake Winnipesaukee near Gilford, New Hampshire on Saturday with only the pilot on board, according to authorities.

The small, single-engine aircraft crashed into the lake roughly 200 yards from Ellacoya State Park shortly before 7:45 p.m. Saturday, Gilford Fire-Rescue Firefighter Adam Gravelle told MassLive.

One person, the pilot, was confirmed to be on board, flying alone. Authorities are still searching for him, Gravelle said.

It is unclear whether anyone was injured in the crash and whether the plane was damaged, according to Gravelle.

The plane that crashed into the lake was a single-engine Cessna 150, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Along with Gilford Fire-Rescue, a Laconia Fire Department ambulance and boat, the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department and the New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol also responded to the scene of the crash, according to Gravelle.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash, and the NTSB is in charge of the investigation.
