My family knew Peter Lappin for a lifetime. Peter worked for my grandfather and father when he was a young man, making extra money delivering groceries. Customers loved Peter. My dad knew he would be successful in public service, in politics, because he could talk to people.
They listened and Peter listened to them. Often, they loved Peter so much that he’d be off schedule on his delivery schedule. My dad didn’t care, Peter always brought back news from our customers.
I knew Peter years later. I knew of his service as an elected official in Springfield, and then when he served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. I was just a kid getting involved in things and yet Peter, a heralded House member and a celebrated Springfield kid who made good, took the time to talk to me, to give advice.
