FOXBOROUGH – The Patriots were hoping to bring back Javon Baker on their practice squad, but he went in a different direction.
Instead, Baker has signed a deal to join the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad, a source told MassLive’s Mark Daniels.
The 2024 fourth-round pick initially made the Patriots’ 53-man roster on Tuesday, but was cut 24 hours later — along with Kendrick Bourne — after the Patriots claimed quarterback Tommy DeVito and defensive back Charles Woods.
After a memorable draft day, Baker’s role never materialized last season in New England. The rookie played in 11 games, catching one pass on four targets for 12 yards.
Baker entered this offseason with a renewed focus and made strides on special teams, where he excelled as a gunner in the preseason. On offense, however, Baker didn’t make as big an impact. In three preseason games, he finished with one catch on 11 targets for 13 yards.
This summer, he fell behind a crowded Patriots receiver depth chart. The team kept six receivers on the roster with Stefon Diggs, DeMario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte, Mack Hollins, Kyle Williams, and Efton Chism III.
At 23 years old, Baker still has potential. That’s why the team wanted to keep him around on their scout team.
