The New England Patriots are facing another injury setback as wide receiver Kendrick Bourne is expected to miss time following an injury sustained during last Friday’s in-stadium scrimmage.
Bourne exited the practice early after getting rolled up on, and head coach Mike Vrabel confirmed Monday that the veteran wideout will not participate this week.
“The update was just kind of got rolled up and he won’t be out here,” Vrabel said. “I wouldn’t anticipate him this week. So, he’ll be working hard to get back, just like everybody else that’s not going to be out here.”
The timing is far from ideal for Bourne, who has been primarily running with the second-team offense during training camp and is battling for a roster spot in a crowded wide receiver room.
In MassLive’s latest 53-man roster projection, reporter Mark Daniels predicted Bourne would be among the receivers cut before the regular season. Daniels noted that with 90 players on the training camp roster and only about six receiver spots expected to be available, tough decisions are inevitable. While Bourne is considered a strong locker room presence, younger players like Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker may have the edge due to their long-term upside.
The Patriots will host a joint practice with the Washington Commanders ahead of their first preseason matchup at Gillette Stadium on Friday night, which will also feature the unveiling of Tom Brady’s statue.
