Patriots Super Bowl winning CB has advice for Christian Gonzalez

FOXBOROUGH — A promising rookie season for Christian Gonzalez crash-landed in Dallas.

The NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the Month for September, Gonzalez made a physical tackle on Cowboys running back Tony Pollard, but landed wrong and tore the labrum in his shoulder. The Patriots placed him on injured reserve last week, and in all likelihood, his first NFL season is over.

So where does Gonzalez go from here?

Jonathan Jones has won a pair of Super Bowl rings as a constant in the Patriots secondary, and had some straightforward advice for his 21-year-old teammate.

“Just stick around and recover. Attack rehab like it’s football,” Jones said in the media workroom on Thursday morning.

Sometimes when players land on injured reserve, they head home to rehab and aren’t seen much. The first line in Jones’ advice to Gonzalez was “stick around,” so what’s the value doing that recovery work at the Gillette Stadium facility?

“For a younger guy, just to hear those coaching points,” Jones said. “So that next year when it comes up, you’ve heard it before. That’s always your growth as a player. Reoccurring things. You’ve heard this twice. You’ve heard this three times. Then it sticks with you a little more. So just being around and catching those coaching points.”
