Patriots sign CB fresh off suspension

FOXBOROUGH — The Patriots have added another player to their practice squad, but it’s not a quarterback.

New England inked free agent cornerback Breon Borders on Thursday, per his agency Exclusive Sports Group. The 28-year-old corner has appeared in 33 games for six different teams, and just finished serving a two game suspension after testing positive for performance-enhancing drugs. Borders played college football at Duke and was most recently with the Atlanta Falcons.

The Patriots are banged up at cornerback right now, as Jack Jones is on injured reserve, Jonathan Jones missed last week’s game with an ankle injury, and Marcus Jones hurt his shoulder against the Dolphins and didn’t return.

It’s still moderately surprising that the Patriots opted to add a cornerback and not a quarterback to their practice squad though, as they’re currently just rolling with two full-time signal callers under contract — Mac Jones and Bailey Zappe — while Malik Cunningham serves as a part-time passer.

New England waived Ian Book and Matt Corral on Monday, and then apparently attempted to re-sign Corral to the practice squad before the deal fell through. Whatever the reason, the Patriots are light on arms at the moment.
