Patriots roster cuts tracker: Full list of players released, traded

FOXBOROUGH — The toughest part of training camp is upon us.

With the final preseason game in the books, Bill Belichick must whittle his roster down from 90 players to 53. The Patriots coach got the ball rolling early ahead of Tuesday’s 4 p.m. EST deadline, cutting a pair of players on Saturday and swinging a trade on Sunday morning.

Here’s a full rundown of all the moves Belichick has made thus far. Everything here has been reported and/or confirmed by MassLive’s Patriots team of Karen Guregian, Mark Daniels, and Chris Mason, unless otherwise noted.

CUT: Carson Wells – Signed late in training camp, the 24-year-old linebacker was only in Foxborough for two weeks before his release. That’s not much time to climb a depth chart.

CUT: Justus Tavai – Jahlani Tavai’s younger brother had some strong moments in camp, but wasn’t able to crack a deep defensive line rotation. He’s a strong practice squad candidate.

CUT: Brad Hawkins – Hawkins spent last season on the Patriots practice squad.

CUT: Johnny Lumpkin – The Patriots haven’t carried a pure blocking tight end like Lumpkin in quite some time. It’s fair to wonder if Belichick still believes in that role philosophically, or would rather just use a sixth offensive lineman there.

TRADED: Pierre Strong – The fourth-round running back from the 2022 NFL Draft was sent to Cleveland for Tyrone Wheatley Jr., a developmental tackle who has yet to play an NFL snap.

CUT: Quandre Mosley (via Doug Kyed) – Still just 24 years old, Mosely already has four stops on his NFL resume.

CUT: Carl Davis – Belichick got the ball rolling with a moderately surprising move, parting ways with Davis. The 31-year-old defensive tackle had appeared in 33 of New England’s 34 games over the past two seasons.
