Patriots rookie WR Kyle Williams still can’t believe he’s playing with his childhood hero

FOXBOROUGH – A 10-year old Kyle Williams couldn’t stop watching a highlight video of a Maryland receiver who wore No. 1.

As a kid, he worshipped Stefon Diggs, who played for the Terrapins from 2012-2014.

As luck would have it, 13 years later, the rookie Patriots receiver is now a teammate of his childhood hero.

“I just kept watching (the Diggs video) every day,” Williams said during his media availability Saturday. “And now look at us today.”

The Patriots third-round pick still has to pinch himself.

“It’s been a blessing. He’s my favorite receiver,” Williams said. “Being right next to him is just a (god-given) gift.”

Williams got some reps with the first-team offense Saturday, and has had those sprinkled in throughout. He’s made some catches here and there, none better than the one he pulled down Wednesday with Christian Gonzalez stuffed in his jersey.

Asked why Diggs was his favorite, Williams talked about the uniqueness of the 4-time Pro Bowler.

“He was just different. He was crafty,” Williams said. “I mean, there was something about him that stuck out to me. I just gravitated towards it.”

Has he perhaps mentioned that to Diggs?

“Not yet,” Williams said. “Once he retires.”
