FOXBOROUGH – Vince Wilfork suspects something’s afoot with the Patriots.
With cutdown day Tuesday, and holes to plug, the Patriots Hall of Famer and two-time Super Bowl champion believes Mike Vrabel might be pushing for a big splash trade to improve the team.
Wilfork doesn’t necessarily get that vibe from player personnel head Eliot Wolf’s recent remarks about being willing to trade off top draft picks, or fellow personnel chief Ryan Cowden doubling down on those remarks.
But he does get that feeling from Patriots coach Vrabel.
“Me knowing Vrabel, I feel he got something up his sleeve,” Wilfork told MassLive last week. “I feel it. There’s something he got brewing.”
The first order of business is getting the roster down to 53. There could be trades involved with that task.
The Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan was first to report that both safety Kyle Dugger and linebacker Anfernee Jennings were available via trade.
Wilfork, however, smells something bigger. It might not happen this week, but it’s going to happen before too long.
“I know how that organization goes. We want to win now. Not in 5 years,” Wilfork said. “We’re not the Cowboys.
“I see Mike, he’s bringing in guys now, so we can win now. We’re not rebuilding so we can win in 5 years.”
Wilfork also mentioned team owner Robert Kraft “getting up there in age” so the win now approach lines up there as well.
At the top of Wilfork’s wish list?
Receiver.
“I think we still have room for another guy,” he said. “We can get one.”
Terry McLaurin just signed an extension with Washington, so the talented wideout is off the board. Ditto Cincinnati pass rusher Trey Hendrickson, who also settled his contract squabble with the Commanders.
Former Patriot Jakobi Meyers, however, has asked out of Las Vegas. So he might be a possibility.
Wilfork thought McLaurin would have changed the “whole dynamic” in Foxborough. So whatever Vrabel has up his sleeve is going to have to come from elsewhere.
