Patriots HOFer says Patrick Mahomes can ‘move mountains,’ but has gripe with Chiefs QB

Patrick Mahomes being a two-time Super Bowl champion and such a good quarterback that there’s constant debates about whether he’s the next Tom Brady, or if he’s even surpassed the seven-time Super Bowl champion. But his success isn’t why a former New England Patriots offensive lineman has a gripe with him.

Matt Light admitted on the latest episode of MassLive’s “Eye On Foxborough” podcast that his thinking might be an “uphill both ways in the snow, old man mentality,” but dove into what’s turned him off about Mahomes, especially of late.

“When I got the league, I never felt that I deserved to be there,” Light told Guregian. “… I was blessed. I got I got to do something that so many people dream about. It was an amazing journey I learned so much. I met so many incredible people. But it comes with what I think is a huge responsibility to emulate the people that got you there, to show respect, to help out others. And, and I firmly think that it’s especially those that are elevated to the highest levels, the Mahomes in the Bradys, the burden is even greater for them to represent themselves in their organization and to be a role model.

“And whenever you see him on the field, especially during that one play that got called back (against the Buffalo Bills) — it was a great play. And to see the way he treated that … I just think it’s a dishonor to the position that he’s been given,” he added. “So that that’s my big gripe.”

Light is referring to when Kadarius Toney was egregiously offsides and the trick play that ended with Travis Kelce throwing a lateral pass to Toney for the touchdown was called back. The Chiefs ended up losing, and Mahomes was hot on the sideline, and his anger carried into his postgame handshake with Josh Allen. Mahomes later apologized for how he acted.

“I just I just wish there was someone that could say, ‘Hey man, everyone’s watching you. Every kid is going to emulate you, You owe it to yourself, to your team, to everyone else, to carry yourself at the highest level. Because guess what? So many kids need it,” Light said. “He has the ability to move mountains with what he does out there on the field.”

Mahomes certainly isn’t the only quarterback to show his emotions after a call he doesn’t agree with, and he won’t be the last. The Chiefs, though, are looking to win their second straight Super Bowl and become the first team to go back-to-back since the Patriots did so in 2003 and 2004.
