Patriots give Matt Corral second chance, bring back QB (source)

Matt Corral will receive another chance with the Patriots.

According to a source, the Patriots are signing Corral to their practice squad after a brief and tumultuous time on the team’s 53-man roster.

This news comes after the Patriots released Corral from the exempt/left squad list on Monday. A day later, after he cleared waivers, the team brought him back. The Patriots also released quarterback Ian Book from the practice squad on Monday, so this makes Corral the third quarterback on the Patriots roster.

The Patriots originally claimed Corral off waivers on August 31 after releasing Bailey Zappe. After a week on the team, however, Corral reportedly left Gillette Stadium and didn’t return for Patriots practice on Friday or to the team’s walkthrough on Saturday before the team’s home opener against the Philadelphia Eagles.

That led the Patriots to placing Corral on the rarely used exempt/left squad list. That situation allows a team to keep a player under their control but also frees up a roster spot. When the Patriots placed Corral on the empty list, they signed Zappe off their practice squad and he’s been the backup to Mac Jones over the first two games.

“He’s on exempt status. I don’t have any comment on it,” Belichick said when asked about Corral. “That’s a personal matter.”

Whatever did happen with Corral, the Patriots have opted to bring the young quarterback and continue to work with him.

Corral was a standout at Ole Miss and was drafted by the Carolina Panthers in the third round, pick 94 of the 2022 NFL Draft.

“Matt has been here morning, noon and night,” Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien said on Sept. 5. “And he’s doing a good job of learning. And we just need to keep progressing him. You can’t throw everything at him at once because that’s a lot of information.

“So, we try to do a good job of giving them the things that are important for him right now. And it’s a team effort, and he’s done a good job of just coming in here and trying to learn and soak it up.”

The news of Corral’s signing was first report by the Boston Herald.
