Patriots get another boost to help troubled tackle position

FOXBOROUGH – Offensive tackle Calvin Anderson was at practice Tuesday, meaning he’s been activated from the non-football injury list.

The Patriots had signed Anderson as a free agent to bolster the tackle position, only the former Bronco has been on NFI and unable to practice since the start of training camp.

His return, coupled with the Patriots adding a couple of offensive tackles (Tyrone Wheatley Jr., Vederian Lowe) in trades over the weekend, should bolster the position going forward.

Anderson will have a couple of weeks to try and get back into shape ahead of the team’s season opener against the Eagles Sept 10.

The veteran backup spent the last four seasons with the Broncos. He played in 41 games and made 12 starts during his time in Denver.

The Patriots signed Anderson and Riley Reiff as right tackle options in free agency. Reiff, who spent the past few weeks at right guard, is currently dealing with an injury. The team has also used rookie Sidy Sow at tackle, converting him from guard. Conor McDermott also saw time at right tackle, but he’s injured as well.

As it stands, Trent Brown will start at left tackle, with any number of possibilities, be it Anderson, Lowe, Wheatley or Sow, now in play on the right side. Anderson, Lowe or Wheatley could also backup on the left side.

The Patriots sent Pierre Strong to the Cleveland Browns in exchange for the 6-foot-6, 320-pound Wheatley, who has never started at tackle in an NFL game, but played during the preseason. They acquired the more experienced Lowe from Minnesota in exchange for a sixth-round pick.

“Both are young players, I think they have upside,” Belichick said of Lowe and Wheatley during his presser Tuesday. “We want to work with them. We’ll get them out there and see how it goes.”

With cut down day in progress, and the team already making some moves, the offensive line is starting to take shape. Guard Chasen Hines was reportedly slashed, but could still end up on the practice squad.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said there were still “multiple balls” in the air with respect to the roster. The team needs to get down to 53 players by 4 p.m. today.
