Patriots downgrade 2 questionable players vs. Jets

The Patriots are going to be without their most experienced cornerback in the Meadowlands.

Jonathan Jones didn’t make the trip to New Jersey and has already been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Jets. The 30-year-old corner injured his ankle in practice and has now missed two straight games. New England also ruled out offensive lineman Sidy Sow, who has been dealing with a concussion.

With Jones sidelined, New England’s cornerback depth gets even thinner, as Marcus Jones (shoulder) joined Jack Jones (hamstring) on injured reserve this week.

“It’s unfortunate,” Bill Belichick said of Marcus Jones’ injury. “He obviously had a good rookie year, explosive player.”

It’ll be fascinating to see who mans the boundary spot opposite Christian Gonzalez, as there isn’t an obvious replacement and Jalen Mills sounds like he’s sticking to safety. The Patriots could also opt for either Shaun Wade, Myles Bryant or practice squad members Breon Borders, Azizi Hearn, William Hooper.

“My focus this offseason, and this season, has been in the safety room,” Mills said Friday.

Does the veteran have a preference between cornerback and safety?

“I like playing safety,” Mills replied.

In positive injury news for the Patriots, questionable players Christian Barmore (knee), Cole Strange (knee) and Mike Onwenu (ankle) all made the trip to New Jersey.
