Patriots change their Hall of Fame rules to honor Tom Brady

On Saturday Tom Brady put his old Patriots jersey on again. In June, he’ll get a red jacket.

Brady was back in Foxborough on Sunday to be honored at halftime by the team he led to six Super Bowl championships during a career that’s certain to land him the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio in five years.

New England owner Robert Kraft announced on Sunday that Brady won’t have to wait at all to go into the Patriots Hall of Fame. During the halftime ceremony, Kraft revealed that he was waiving the normal four-year waiting period. Brady will be inducted in June.

The event will be held in the stadium on June 12, a symbolic date — 6/12— combining Brady’s total number of championships and his jersey number. Fans will need a ticket to attend the free event. Details will be announced at a later date. Kraft didn’t want to wait until then to honor him and invited him back for the team’s Week 1 game vs. Philadelphia.

“When Tom Brady announced his retirement after 23 NFL seasons, there was only one place I wanted him to be on opening day – right here at Gillette Stadium, with 65,000 of his closest friends,” Kraft said. “Patriots fans didn’t get an opportunity to appropriately thank Tom when he left. I wanted to give them that opportunity. Unfortunately, a halftime ceremony just doesn’t provide enough time to honor Tommy the way he deserves.”

Brady spent two decades in New England led the Patriots to nine AFC Championships and 17 division titles and won three MVPs. He signed with Tampa Bay as a free agent before the 2020 season and won another Super Bowl there. He is the NFL’s career leader in passing yards (89,214) and touchdowns (649).
