FOXBOROUGH – With training camp officially kicking off Wednesday, the highly-touted cornerback duo of Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis III will come into focus in earnest.
Davis, who signed a 3-year, $60 million contract with the Patriots during free agency, wasn’t around for many of the OTA sessions, although he did participate in minicamp.
Even though he was recently placed on the (non-football injury) NFI list, Patriots coach Mike Vrabel said Tuesday he expected Davis to be ready for the start of camp.
Gonzalez, for one, was looking forward to having his sidekick across the way.
The duo are already considered one of the best cornerback tandems in the league, which should provide the defense a tremendous boost.
Gonzalez, who spoke with the media Tuesday, said it’s been “awesome” getting to know Davis.
“It was fun to be in here with him in OTAs, pick his brain a little bit,” Gonzalez said. “He’s won a Super Bowl, he’s done it at the highest level, he’s done it for a long time, he’s made a lot of plays.”
Davis won a Super Bowl with Tom Brady in Tampa Bay, and spent last season with the Detroit Lions. So he brings a wealth of knowledge to the room.
“It’s always great to have that vet in the room, lean on him, ask him questions and how he sees certain things,” Gonzalez said. “It’s fun being on the field with him, and all the DBs. I’m excited for it.”
