Brad Marchand has yet to make his debut for the Florida Panthers as he continues to rehab from an upper-body injury suffered on March 1.
But that soon could change.
Panthers coach Paul Maurice told reporters on Wednesday that they’re hoping Friday against the Utah Hockey Club will be the day Marchand plays. Maurice added that Marchand will go through a full practice on Thursday and go from there.
The Panthers haven’t played since Sunday, which has given them and Marchand some extra time this week. But Maurice said he will be cautious when it comes to getting his newest player into game action.
“We’re not jamming these guys back on their first available day,” he said. “We’re not bringing them in early. If he says he wants a few more days, we’re good with that.”
Marchand was traded to Florida at this year’s NHL trade deadline after 16 seasons with the Bruins. Boston hosted the Panthers four days later and while Marchand traveled with the team, he didn’t suit up.
The former Bruins captain has been dealing with an upper-body injury suffered on a hit into the boards against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Marchand and the Bruins were unable to come to terms on a contract extension despite the 36-year-old’s desire to stay and the team wanting to keep him rostered. Marchand is set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, and it’s possible he and the Bruins reunite for the 2025-26 season.
But for now, the Panthers are focused on finishing out the regular season as they prepare for the playoffs.
