Oreo has never made a chocolate cookie quite like this | Nick Ate It

I’m going to say something crazy: The new Oreo Thins Chocolate Ganache are the first Oreos that really taste like “chocolate.”

Oreo has made a lot of cookies with “chocolate” in the name. But those are mostly sugar bombs that have a chocolate flavor.

Honestly, I think a lot of kids won’t like these. It really tasks your palate to linger on more complex, roasty notes. When comparing them to normal Oreos, it’s like going from “The Avengers” to “Oppenheimer.” Both have Robert Downey Jr., but one brings a lot more sugary action to the table.

Normally, the formula for an Oreo is that you have the super-sweet creme in the center, with bitter outer cookies to balance things out. These cookies break away from that formula.

Oreo Thins Chocolate Ganache | Review

Oreo Thins Chocolate Ganache joins a long list of flavors that either have chocolate in the name or are designed to mostly taste like chocolate.

We’re talking Chocolate Creme Oreos, Blackout Cake Oreo, Dirt Cake Oreos, Dark Chocolate Oreos, Oreo Thins Dark Chocolate, Chocolate Covered Pretzel Oreos, Chocolate Hazelnut Oreos, Chocolate Marshmallow Oreo and even Ultimate Chocolate Oreos.

It’s odd to say, but I stand by my opinion that these Chocolate Ganache cookies taste more like dark chocolate than the actual “Dark Chocolate Oreos.”

For whatever reason, Oreo waited until now to get really rich and chocolatey with a filling.

What do they taste like?

Oreo Thins Chocolate Ganache are the first Oreo in a long time that I wouldn’t really describe as “sweet.” You get a lot of pure cocoa flavor in the creme that creates a slightly bitter drag on your palate.

As Oreos go, these definitely lean more on the bitter side. It’s closer to biting into a bar of actual dark chocolate. Meanwhile, most other flavors are like biting into a Tootsie Roll or a piece of fudge that’s chocolate-flavored.

It’s a small distinction. But it stands out when you take a bite.

Now, here’s the big question: Is that actually the best thing for an Oreo?

Not really. It’s like if Eminem did a concert that was just ballads on acoustic guitar. It’s cool to see them pull off something different, but it’s not exactly what the people are paying their money to see.

Where do they rank?

I appreciate the effort here. Oreo tried something different by going with a more muted, complex flavor.

But here’s the problem: Oreos are at their best when you’ve got a balance between the sweetness and the cookie. It’s not the best platform to try something so dense and complicated.

They’re not bad. But they’re not great. I’m putting these at No. 54 in my ongoing rankings, which have been in the works since 2014.
