One person died and two others were injured in a plane crash near Block Island State Airport in Rhode Island on Wednesday, according to WPRI.
The small plane crashed into nearby trees after landing at the airport around 12:30 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The plane was a Piper PA-28 — a type of single-engine aircraft.
Three people were in the plane at the time of the crash, Block Island firefighters said in a Facebook post. Emergency responders had to free all three before taking them to a local hospital.
Photos of the crash shared by firefighters show the plane upside down and badly damaged.

New Shoreham police said that a 77-year-old man died while being transported to a hospital following the crash, WPRI reported. The other two people who were in the plane were flown to Rhode Island Hospital but are expected to survive.
Police also told the news station that the plane tried to land at least twice prior to crashing, but “essentially ran out of runway” during a third attempt. Town officials said no one besides the people in the plane were injured in the crash, WPRI reported.
A spokesperson for Albany International Airport in New York told the news station the plane had taken off from the airport at 10:50 a.m. and was set to fly to Block Island State Airport. The aircraft belonged to Condair Flyers Flying Club — an Albany airport-based non-profit flying club of approximately 75 members.
The FAA is investigating the crash. No further information — including the name of the person who died — has been released.
