One person is dead and another was seriously injured following a fire in a Lowell apartment Friday morning, authorities say.
According to the state Department of Fire Services, Lowell Fire Department received an alarm at about 9:10 p.m. and responded to 144 Appleton St. When firefighters arrived, they saw heavy smoke coming from the front of the building.
One person, who authorities said was seriously injured, was already outside of the building when firefighters arrived. That person was brought to the hospital for treatment.
Firefighters learned that another person was still inside the building. They found the person, who was not publicly identified, unconscious when they entered and attempted to save them, but were unsuccessful. The person was pronounced dead at the scene.
All other residents of the multifamily apartment building escaped safely, officials said.
Firefighters were able to keep the fire within the apartment where it started and put it out within about 40 minutes.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
