EUCLID, Ohio — Former friends and classmates of fallen Euclid Police Department Officer Jacob Derbin have started a memorial fund in his name in the form of a GoFundMe page.
The fund seeks $15,000 to create a memorial stone in Derbin’s honor, according to the page description. The note is signed by the Cuyahoga Heights High School class of 2018.
The message states that Derbin was an excellent athlete during high school, playing football and throwing shotput.
“Your support in this endeavor will not only honor Jacob’s memory but will also provide solace to his family and friends during this difficult time. Please consider contributing to help us create a lasting tribute to a remarkable individual who touched so many lives. Thank you for your generosity and for keeping Jacob’s memory alive in our hearts,” the note reads.
Derbin, who was a first-year officer, was killed in an ambush on May 11 when he went to search a backyard for a suspect.
Despite his injuries, Derbin managed to warn his fellow officers about the suspect’s location, an act that Euclid Police Chief Scott Meyer described as the “total work of a hero.”
