No one hurt after small garage goes up in flames in Westfield

WESTFIELD – There were no injuries reported after a small garage located behind a home on King Street was heavily damaged in a Jan. 5 fire.

“We got it knocked down pretty fast,” said Westfield Fire Deputy Chief Eric Bishop while standing outside the scene of the fire.

The department got the call at 11:48 a.m., and with minutes the first pumper arrived with fire showing from the garage, which was unattached to the home, behind the King Street home, he said. Bishop said the quick actions of the firefighters kept the flames from spreading to the home.

While there were no injuries, but there were at least two motorcycles inside the garage, according to witnesses on the scene who identified themselves as friends of the homeowner.

“They’re a couple of Harley-Davidsons inside,” one of the witnesses said who also described hearing the muffled boom of a small explosion before firefighters arrived.

After firefighters knocked down the initial flames, efforts to put the fire completely out continued for about an hour and half. To get at the flames inside the shed’s roof, firefighters had to cut several holes in the roof to vent the smoke and attack the smoldering wood with water.

Bishop said the state fire marshal was on the scene to investigate the cause, which was not immediately determined.

By 1:30 p.m., the department left the scene, according to police logs.
