Newcomers join West Springfield council, School Committee

WEST SPRINGFIELD — While neighboring cities filled mayoral offices, voters in West Springfield put new candidates on the City Council and School Committee.

All seats were unopposed.

On the council, newcomer William E. Forfa will represent District 1, incumbent Michael J. LaFlamme will represent District 2, Anthony R. DiStefano has been elected to District 3, and newcomer Frederick Connor has been elected to represent District 4.

District 1 Councilor Michael S. Eger and City Council President Edward C. Sullivan opted not to seek reelection.

Voters also reelected Daniel O’Brien, Sean Powers, Brian J. Griffin, Jamie L. Smith and Brian J. Clune to the City Council’s at-large seats. Newcomer Elisa M. Olivo failed to advance on Election Day, garnering the least votes.

Of the winning candidates, one councilor will be nominated and voted on as the new council president at the City Council’s first meeting, which is scheduled for Jan. 2.

School Committee

Nancy Farrell, vice chair of the School Committee, opted not to run for reelection.

Newcomer Julie Anne Wise joins incumbents Robert Mancini, Kira Thomson, Diana Coyne, Colleen Ann Marcus and Kathleen A. Alevras. Mustafa Latif Thompson gathered the least votes and did not land a seat.

The mayoral four-year term was not up for reelection, and there were no questions on the ballot.

City Clerk Otto Frizzell said voter turnout was 16.6%, which was slightly higher than average for this type of election. Of West Springfield’s 20,110 registered voters, 3,388 turned out to cast a ballot in Tuesday’s election.
